A Gate at the Stairs is an original and unexpectedly hilarious read and Lorrie Moore’s first novel in over a decade.
In it, twenty-year-old narrator Tassie leaves home on the farm in America’s anonymous Midwest for college life. She takes a job as a part-time nanny for an odd couple, Sarah and Edward Brink, the soon-to-be foster parents of toddler Mary-Emma, while back home her younger brother enlists in the military at the height of America’s war on the Middle East.
I really liked it, it’s a quietly emotional and powerful story.
