Review: The Chosen by Arlene Hunt

Looking for a gripping read?  Try Irish crime writer, Arlene Hunt’s new novel.  I didn’t want to leave it down.  So much so, that I found myself still reading at 2.20am on a school night.  What followed was the worst night’s sleep I’ve had in a long time, but I mean that as a compliment to Hunt.

Jessie Conway is a teacher at an American high school.  One day, students Kyle and Hector open fire on staff and classmates.  Jessie tackles Kyle and shoots Hector.  She saves her own life and plenty of others and, as a result, is lauded locally as a hero.

Most people look at Jessie and see a brave, selfless woman, someone to be admired and respected.

Caleb Switch looks at Jessie and sees a challenge.

And so it begins, the real action in Hunt’s The Chosen.

Sick, terrifying Caleb likes to kidnap women and hold them hostage before releasing them into the wild and hunting them.  Yes, hunting them.  Yes, with a shotgun, studying their ‘tracks’, listening to the wind, following their scent — all that stuff.  Treating his victims like animals.  Which is why this book packs such a punch.

What Hunt (how apt!) has done is to create the scariest and – at least in my mind – most disturbing character of all; the one that sees others as animals, instead of human beings.

A sure-fire hit with Criminal Minds fans. Sadly though, no sign of a dreamy Reid.  So here’s a pic to tide you over.  You know who you are.  No judging ’round here…
